There are some mechanical aspects to take into account:
- centering of light source / negative / lens
- diffuser / negative / focal plane / base board have to be parallel
- path of the lens plate that closer or further away from the negative for focusing must be perpendicular
Parallel surfaces #
Rather easy to check with a laser and a mirror. If the reflected light hits the origin of the laser, the planes are parallel.
This works only if the beam is perpendicular to its base. I use a bore sight laser so I expect it to be "good enough" for my use.
Lens plate #
Lens plate is made of several elements
- The base plate that is sliding vertically on rods (using a lead screw)
- A secondary plate fastened on the base plate using perpendicular slots to allow XY moves for centering
- A plate with hole where the lens adapter can be mounted and that can be tuned with three screws to set it parallel to the base board
Mounting plan #
- Diffuser surface must be parallel to base board (laser auto-colimation from base board)
- Negative holder plate must be parallel to base board and centered on diffuser (laser auto-colimation from base board)
- Reference rod must be mounted perpendicular to negative plate (3D printed mounting template)
- Second rod must be mounted (maybe a bit loose)
- Lens plate must be adjusted to be centered (slots) and parallel (laser) to negative plane
